At the end of march in 2021 I decided I needed to do something because I was a mess and needed to do something to improve my quality of life not just for myself but for my family too.
I made a phone call to the Highfield in Rochdale to make an appointment and was given an appointment to see Professor Senapati on 29/4/21
I arrived at the appointment not sure what to expect and also believing that there would be nothing he would be able to do for me because of my other medical conditions. I was called through promptly and was greeted by Professor Senapati. He took my height and weight and we proceeded in to his office.
I remember this consultation like it was yesterday. He sat me down and just said “so what can I do for you” I said well you have the figures and I was you to make me better.
He said well I recommend the Gastric bypass and proceeded to explain the procedure to me. When he had done this he lay me on the couch to have a feel of my tummy and sat me back down. He looked in his diary a penned me in for surgery for the 26/5/21. He explained that because I had sleep apnoea that I would have to have the surgery at The Alexandra in Cheadle so I could have a bed in high dependency ,as they could not facilitate this at the Highfield. I was elated if not a bit emotional that he could help fix me. When I was ready for leaving I asked if I could shake his hand (as we were still in the middle of the pandemic) and he came around his desk and hugged me. I knew right there and then that he would be the man to fix me and he would take great care of me.
Fast forward to operation day I was well looked after and the operation went well. I spent a total of 4 night in The Alexandra and was seen by the specialist team through out.
It is 12 months since my surgery and I have had regular check-up appointments with the team with lots of friendly advice.
I recently went for my 12 month follow up appointment with Professor Senapati and again he was so friendly and was made up with my progress as am I. again as I left he stood and hugged me. I said to him you have changed my life to which he replied “it took me an hour to do the surgery and the rest is the hard work you have put in”
t the start of my journey I always believed I was a size 24 in clothes (probably more like a 26/28). If I went to buy new things in a 24 and they didn’t fit, it never occurred to me that it was me that was larger than I ever cared to admit but I would say that the clothes were rubbish sizes. Anyways now I’m really happy that I can fit in to “normal” size clothes I buy now a size 16-18 but still have to try them on as I still can’t believe I’m buying that size. I hope to soon be buying smaller but this will come with time I am sure. How this surgery has changed my life. Well I used to be really tired all the time and had no energy and simple tasks were a chore. For example tying my shoe laces, 12 months ago that took a lot of negotiating and now it has never been so easy. Going to a theme park and being faced with the embarrassment of being told would have to get off because I was too big, well that is also a thing of the past. When I used to go upstairs to bed at night and forget something down stairs I would send my partner down for it or even leave it down there until morning, now if I forget something I’m down and back up in a flash. I started my journey with Professor Senapati at 145kgs (22stone 8lbs) with a bmi of 51.4 and height 168 to 12 months later weighing 88.9kgs (14 stone) with a bmi of 32.2. I have lost 72% of my excess fat. I now no longer have sleep apnoea and my diabetes is under much better control.
If you are in a similar situation to me and thinking about doing it I would say go for it. It is the best decision I ever made. If I was to have any regrets, honestly the only one I would have is that I didn’t do this sooner.
Some people believe this is the easy option. It isn’t. Far from it. You have to re educate your self and learn to listen to your body and learn to read the signs. If you don’t you can make your self ill. I am slowly learning to love my self now and I am very proud of my achievements so far. I could not have done this with out Professor Senapati.
I would highly recommend Professor Senapati and his team at The Alexander Hospital in Cheadle.
I have had a 5* experience.
